Very little can be established with certainty about his life because no writings by Thales have survived. Much of what is known comes from later ancient authors who recorded traditions about his ideas and achievements.

Thales became famous for attempting to understand nature through reason and observation. This approach helped establish a tradition of natural philosophy that later developed through other Greek thinkers.

He is also traditionally counted among the Seven Sages of Greece, a group remembered for practical wisdom and influential sayings.
